It stretches about 22 miles, but we are hiking only portion of the Escarpment trail North/South Lake Southern escarpment loop which is about 11 miles, and starts from the Scutt road parking area to the North Point.

Overlook Mountain is the southernmost peak of the Catskill Escarpment in the central Catskill Mountains near Woodstock, New York. The Overlook Mountain Wild Forest offers a unique combination: a historic fire tower, mountain house ruins, and impressive views of the Hudson River Valley and the central Catskills all within an under five-mile hike. At 1.6 miles you see the massive castle-like ruins of the latest and never-completed Overlook Mountain House You then move on to the fire tower at an elevation of 3,140 ft. The spur trail to the right of the ground cabin takes you to a ledge with a magnificent view of the Hudson River, Ashokan Reservoir, the Central Catskills, and up to five states. Located in the Catskill park region, Overlook Mountain beckons nature lovers with its trails and campgrounds. Hudson Valley views from the cliffs on Overlook are incredible, and the fire tower and old hotel ruins. but the reward is 2 miles up, where the ruins of a hotel wait for you to explore! Another .5 and there is a fire tower as well, offering views of the Catskills and Hudson Valley.
